Oklahoma! is a love story set in the early days of the Oklahoma Territory of the
United States, and plays on the rivalry between the farmers and the ranchers. It
was the first musical collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein, produced in
New York in 1943. Based on Lynn Riggs' Green Grow the Lilacs, this musical
Western tells the story of rambunctious cowboy Curly and his courtship of the
equally headstrong Laurey against the backdrop of the Oklahoma territory where
the "corn is as high as an elephant's eye." Songs from this groundbreaking
musical include "Surrey With the Fringe on Top", "People Will Say We're in
Love", "Out of My Dreams", "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin' ", and,
of course, the title song,
"Oklahoma!".
